Punkins!
Tuesday, October 3, 2006 at 10:39PM It's that time of year...bring out your little gourds. All alone they aren't very pretty, but put them in context and they're really lovely. Orangey-golden, deep green, buttery yellow, and creamy white - solid, striped, gradients, half-and-half - and then there are those odd shapes you only see in this family of the vegetable kingdom. Where do winged vegetables come from anyways? Never mind the crazy lumps, warts, and hooked stems. Chalk them up to that "ugly-beautiful" thing, just like Post-Modern architecture, the Mona Lisa, and Boston Terriers.
This group was found in a fruit stand in Manteca, CA - the town mid-way between Yosemite National Park and the Pacific Ocean. Just as you think there are only almond groves and corn fields forever, there's a little family fruit stand selling ugly-beautiful gourds that big-city designers love. And only three for a dollar!
