A Red Coat - Number 17

0476050201788_ASTL_300x400.jpgI have always wanted a red coat. It's one of those clothing items that you know would take you places, but you never actually spend the money on because of the risk. How can I let myself buy red when black I can wear every day? Red makes a statement, but a red coat makes more of a statement - I suppose it's an intimidation factor, "the red coats are coming" and all that. The red is a luxury - a little frivolous, outspoken, and very...red...you can't mistake it, or miss it. Since most people only buy one overcoat a year (at least in San Francisco we only need one per year,) the idea of purchasing a frivolous, statement-making, RED coat is very luxurious indeed.

Chinese New Year is every February. According to one Chinese friend of mine, every Chinese New Year should be greeted with new clothing and lots of red for prosperity and happiness. Last year on Chinese New Year, I got on the bus for my daily commute, and at the next stop, a lovely Chinese lady boarded, elegantly dressed in a spanking new red overcoat. I was positively green with envy. The deep blue-red hue, the cut, her crimson lipstick, her poise at knowing she was so well turned-out.  People who look good in the color red know it inherently and wear this knowledge proudly. I am one of those people.

The thing is, when it comes time to find a red coat, you can hardly locate any of them. The first problem is the color - reds range from orange-red to blue-red to burgundy, and they look differently on everyone. Then there is the cut - who wants a coat that's going to be outdated next year? Especially after investing in the luxurious frivolity of a red coat? This fall, there's a lot of red on the market, but not a lot of red coats. This one by Charles Nolan is the stand-out: sleek, simple, perfect length, and the perfect red hue.  How chic would I feel wearing this on the bus on the way to work? How many girls would be green with envy over me? This is the kind of red coat that's worth the investment in frivolity.

The red coat has changed throughout its history from being a British infantryman's ordinary uniform to a ceremonial garment. Its official history begins on February 1645, when the Parliament of England passed the New Model Army ordinance.

Red is indeed a very lucky color for Chinese. And many have adopted that belief. But of course aside from that red indeed gives you a stunning look and an amazing aura that other colors don't match. And come to think of it, I love red but I don't have a red shirt or anything. This article reminded me to get one this Holiday Season.
