The Countdown Begins...

cupcakes.jpgIt’s official – there’s now less than thirty days until I turn thirty. I am very happy about this passage. Thirty is the new twenty, and I am eager to shed my twenty-ninth year, and my twenties altogether. So, to gear up for the big day and the bigger party, I will be using the next thirty days to post absolutely overwhelmingly wonderful things that I would love for my birthday. They range from shamelessly luxurious to downright silly, but I asked myself “why not?” so I’ve created a list. I mean, who hasn’t wanted the platinum birthday: ticker-tape parade, key to the city, a bunch of balloons weighted by a bottle of Cristal? Thirty is about being bold, so I’m boldly listing my dream gift-list. They’re in no particular ranking or order – who could possibly say which one was better than the next? – certainly not me. I like to think of this project as a kind of chocolate advent calendar, except that instead of a daily morsel of chocolate, I’d get something even tastier. And so, the countdown begins…

Number 30: A Day at Burke Williams Day Spa

The new Burke Williams Day Spa has opened in the San Francisco Centre, and from what I hear, it’s “the it.” I’ve never spent a full day at a spa; I’ve only ever allowed myself a facial OR a massage OR a mani-pedi. For one day I’d love to be one of those ladies that just walks in the door and goes for it – the full treatment, never mind the cost. I want to say: “I’m here for the treatment,” like some rich eccentric going into a discreet Swiss clinic for shock therapy. I’d love to learn what all those mud, seaweed, hydrotherapy, and hot stone things are all about. What are they all about? Since I’m already stressed, tired, and over-partied, it would be great to have a solid day just to recuperate. Burke Williams is the newest spa in the city, and they have a full menu of day-long packages…you mean people do this all the time?

Hi Annie, if you do try Burke Williams let me know how you like it. My hairdresser also recommended it, he loves their location in LA. I've been to spas at different resorts during my travels. My favorite in SF is the Huntington Hotel - be sure to have lunch on the terrace (amazing views of downtown). My favorite 'out-of-town' spa is Meadowwood resort in St. Helena - very calm and tranquil. The most exotic spa I've visited was in Arima, Japan. Very indulgent - everyone walks around in indigo blue 'yukatas' and eats healthy vegetarian Japanese food! Yum. I think you should treat yourself to a day of pampering, after all you only turn 30 once! xoxo S.
