The Big Three-Oh!

Yes, today is the day... It's my day to wear my pretty-pretty pincess dress and demand a pony from Daddy. It is a day that is confetti-strewn, flavored with sugary icing, and lit by many many tiny candles. It is a day for laughter and good friends...and here in my world I woke up to blue skies and birds tweeting out my window - it seemed like I was in the opening scene of Cinderella. How cheesy is that? But it fits. This being California, I'm going to go find myself some more of that blue sky, a palm tree, and a cup of dark-roast coffee to go with it all. Happy Birthday to ME!
"Gute zum Geburtstag!" My grandmother would shout into to telephone on this morning of the year - while she lived, she was always the first person to call. Even in college, with the beginnings of a hangover headache, I'd know it was her even before I got to the phone - maybe the rings sounded differently? Before I could get a word in, she'd sing "Happy Birthday" in German over the phone. As friends began to call today, I would hear the phone ringing and wonder if it was Grandma...
My friend Emilie pointed out to me that while I am now thirty, I am now in my FOURTH decade. That does indeed change the outlook, but not much. Do I feel differently? Yes. It feels like my age had caught up with my confidence and worldly insouciance. It feels that my talk is now finally backed up by my jive. It feels like I'm old enough to know better, but still too young to care.
Thirty has dawned and it is a day full of optimism and bottled promise for good things. Thirty feels fantastic!

I did 35 on 11.28.06 so I can vouch for it. It gets more fun, easier, with more friends and more laughs.
