FALLing for it!
Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at 01:37PM Fall is every true fashion lover’s favorite season. The tweeds, the wools, the cashmere, the deep hues of rust, chocolate, olive, and aubergine… And not to mention the suede pumps and knee-high boots. It’s time to dive into the autumnal luxury and get yourself something new. Even though I’m long out of a uniform, I am still inclined to go get new saddle shoes and a fresh set of Pee Chees. The crispy edge to the air, the golden-hued light showing a lower sun in the sky – everyone seems inclined to layer. Where a month ago you were wilting in a sloppy peasant skirt, you now walk tall in a polished top coat and shiny t-strap pumps…It’s time to renew, refresh, and wrap up in something gorgeous.
Yes, it’s September… back-to-school, football, and the month of the mammoth magazine dwarfing your mailbox. I think my mail carrier has a vendetta against all of my subscriptions, since he deigns to deliver them until a good ten days after the issue is on the newsstand. Um, hello? Isn’t that ruining the whole point? I know they’re heavy and everything, but get it together Mr. Mailman! I need my Bazaar…! It is also the month when the magazines ask the most fabulous people, attending the most fabulous events, what their fashion picks are for the coming season. I thought about this and I realized that I too know many fabulous people who know a thing or two about a thing or two… Why don’t I ask them what’s on their fall fashion wish-list? So I did…and here’s what I found out…
Kate Logan, owner of Ooma Boutique, San Francisco, CA:
“One item?? Are you crazy? There is no way I could only buy one item. But if you’re forcing me to choose – I’ll call it my “essential”. In fact – I just bought it. It’s the Trina Turk funnel coat. it’s black (can you believe I don’t own a black coat already!?) – thick and warm for the scooter [Kate commutes via Vespa] – but very sassy, trim & modish in cut. the hot pink lining is quintessentially Kate. I’m sure I’ll wear it anytime I’m wearing black or things that look good with black. It’s dressy enough to wear over my vintage brocade shift - but so perfect for everyday as well. I love that you can button it up really high on the neck – it’s like a built in scarf. I’ll definitely pair it with a hat – because I think it demands it. I’ll pretend I’m living in Europe.“
Genevieve Roja, education & outreach coordinator – Breast Cancer Fund, San Francisco, CA:
“Oh MAN! That’s a tough one. If it has to be one (BIG SIGH), I guess I would say… A mini dress to go with fall's moody palette. Right now I have my eye on this Victorian-esque one from Free People and a simple black one from Theory. I’d like to wear them with black tights and my worn-in caramel-colored scrunched up boots for a fun evening look and maybe a little teased-in-the-back high ponytail. FUN!”
Maura Miller, attorney, New York, NY:

“I already bought 'em . . . Dries Van Noten black leather round toe wooden stack chunky-heeled pump. Perfectly Fall 2006. Goes with everything from skirts to skinny jeans, and you can run in them . . . Why? Because of all of the above, and because they make my heart sing! Understated, beautiful, odd, wearable.”
Reba Phillips, at-home mom (at the moment,) San Jose, CA:
“I choose the Miu Miu black patent Baroque wedge (with the carved heel). Actually I bought them. Shhh, don't tell the hubby. I will wear them with simple outfits, the shoes are so fabulously ornate [Oh honey! Ya think?] that the jeans and a sweater will be the perfect backdrop for them, as will the various black dresses I have. I needed them, they spoke to me. With the twins [Isabella & Sophia - fashionistas-in-training,] wearing fabulous dry clean only clothes is hard to do but I can ALWAYS were amazing shoes. Besides when I wear them, you are less likely to see the spit up on my shoulder.”
And for me, what would I choose? Well, I have given this a lot of thought, and I have decided that I want the Louis Vuitton twisted-front cashmere bustier. The fabric is so luxurious, and the way it twists adds a different dimension to the piece. It could be worn with jeans and a velvet jacket, or over black pants. Also, I’d like to wear a thin little tee underneath – American Apparel or James Perse – or a mesh top… Tees under bustiers or strapless dresses is big this fall, but still a fresh silhouette.
