San Francisco is truly moving up in the fashion world: we got H&M earlier this year, we're getting a Bloomingdale's and a Barney's soon, and this summer a Marc by Marc Jacobs store opened up on Fillmore Street at Sacramento. Why do any of us need to go to New York any more? (Okay, Magnolia Bakery is a good reason, but Miette Patisserie in the Ferry Building does the job closer to home.) We'll see how Bloomie's & Barney's do here, but the Marc by Marc store was a hit from the moment it opened - I should know, I was there. Actually, I even introduced myself to Patrick Duffy who was manning the door. He complimented me on my Cerise Sac Plat from Louis Vuitton - admitting that he wished he'd bought one himself.
That encounter with Mr. Duffy has helped me to change my overall view of Marc Jacobs - hey, I can change! (I know I'm not MJ's biggest fan...he has his merits, but the word "genious" gets thrown around FAR TOO OFTEN in his presence. This must stop.) The new San Francisco store is fun, refreshing, and brings out the hip little girl in all of us. The photo booth in the store may contribute to that, or it could be the little $5 bins of stickers and keychains. All in all, it's a total delight.
I am even more delighted to let you know that this same San Francisco store is currently selling the soon-to-be-black-market t-shirts benefitting the NYU School of Medicine Interdisciplinary Melanoma Cooperative Group. That's a long, fancy name for a group of wonderful people trying to cure skin cancer, and Monsieurs Jacobs & Duffy are happy to help! So happy that they got naked for it, and they brought their friends along too. HOT friends like Naomi Campbell, Winona Ryder, Selma Blair, Dita von Tesse, Carolyn Murphy, and others all stripped down and posed for Brian Bowen Smith. Their coquettish poses grace colorful t-shirts front & back, while the phrases "Protect the skin you're in!" "Protect your largest organ!" and "Cover your ass!" strategically cover all that needs covering. The tees are available for only $20.00, benefitting the NYU Melanoma Cooperative.
Patrick Duffy spearheaded this project as he was diagnosed with melanoma four years ago. Having, as my friend Dan once said to me, "alabaster skin that never sees the sun," I know that melanoma is a lot closer to home than many of us think. Listen to your esthetician, go buy the Oil of Olay SPF 30 or the like, and wear it! Everyday! And go to the Marc Jacobs store and buy yourself a fun t-shirt. I promise you, if you wear a tee with a naked Dita von Tesse on the front, men will buy you drinks. And your skin will thank you.
