Anyway...it's about old friends...
Monday, December 31, 2007 at 1:09AM What is New Year's all about? The simple answer is the new beginning of a new year. However, we can't completely wipe the proverbial slate clean or starting fresh wouldn't mean anything. The whole point of living a crazy life is to recognize our mistakes and carry that recognition through our successes. It's the same with the people in our lives: it's always important to be open to new people and make new friends, but the whole experience is best understood in counterpoint to our oldest and best friends.
"Should auld aquaintance be forgot?" No, but with a few caveats. I've fought to keep people in my life even when I probably shouldn't have, but in the long run, those that stick around are the ones that mean the most to me. History is important - it keeps you centered and gives perspective when you get far too caught up in the daily noise. Family gives us our history, but friends do too - especially in that wonderful time between leaving one's family and starting one's own with another person.
So, this New Year's, I'm celebrating friendship and all of the love it brings. Or as was perfectly shown in When Harry Met Sally:
