Taking Sunday Back

anchor_bottle.jpgAs I rule, I HATE springing forward. I find the first part of Daylight Savings time to be totally unnatural and an overall nuisance. Why do I need to run around changing clocks and waking up in the dark? What did I do that I must lose an hour out of my day? How does this benefit my life? It makes me pretty grouchy for a few days.

Yesterday was no exception. I woke up hungry, cranky, and with a list of chores to do that was a mile long. I went out to get my cup of Peet's, and found a glorious day beginning on the edge of the Pacific: blue skies, sunshine, and temperatures in the mid-seventies - and that's just to start. My mood improved through the late morning and afternoon, as I told myself that if I got all my work done I could go window-shopping on Fillmore Street, or go to Whole Foods and plan a nice dinner. It may not be much, but just enough to salvage one of the rare warm days San Francisco gets to enjoy...

Then I called Cooper to see what was cooking...

"We're in the backyard drinkin' beer! Come over!"

"Oh...okay..." Is my mood improved enough to be around other people? I wasn't sure, but drinking beer in a friend's sunny backyard on Potrero Hill sounded pretty damn good.

"Just bring some Anchor Steam..."

As I tried to figure out where to go buy Anchor Steam, I got a text message which read... "bring some ice too..." Sheesh! Like it isn't enough I'm buying expensive microbrew, I gotta buy your ass ice too? My friends are just as demanding as I am. I popped into Rainbow Grocery, grabbed a six of Pacifico (my preference,) and then, with a moment's consideration at the Liberty Ale, I grabbed the Anchor Steam. Ten minutes later the beer I had purchased was sweating  in a galvanized bucket in the middle of the patio table...

Brian: "Wow - so who bought more Anchor Steam?"

Cooper: "You can thank Miss Ann Marie for that..."

Brian: "Nice!"

Me: "Sure...I almost bought Liberty, but I was under strict instructions to get Anchor..."

Brian: "Oh man - and I like the Liberty more! Liberty Ale is just about the most perfect beer in the world..."

Then, something rare and wonderful happened...the weather held. No wind, no fog, no Pacific chill - just perfect, robust high pressure and a constant in the mid-seventies. The music played, we told stories, talked politics, and laughed like crazy. When it finally got dark, we pulled out the lanterns, lit the tiki torches, and kept things going.

Cyndy: "Man - I love taking Sunday back..."

Sue: "I know, we need to do this every week!"

Me: "What's 'Taking Sunday Back'?"

Sue: "We're doing it...partying on Sunday...It's Cyndy's idea - the Taking Sunday Back movement..."

Cyndy: "I always thought Sunday was such a waste - nobody parties on Sunday...Why not? Monday's going to suck anyways..."

If there's something good about Daylight Savings it's the ability to hang out with friends, drink good beer, and take back more Sundays.

Taking Sunday back... what a wonderful concept! I'll have to start throwing parties in the name of reclaiming Sunday.

Great idea - and wonderful post!! :)
What a super day that must have been - I definitely need a couple of days to regroup after DST (it's earlier in Canada this year so we now match the US) but I do love longer daylight hours...

Thanks for sharing such a great story - here's to taking back Sundays!! (this is me clinking your sweating beer mug)
