Goodbye Dumbo!

DUMBO.JPG

Taken near my building in the DUMBO area of Brooklyn... That's: "Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overcrossing" for the uninitiated. From the office I've been sitting in, I hear the contstant streams of subway trains crossing the Manhattan Bridge - did you know that this bridge carries four lines of subway trains, seven lanes of traffic, a bike path, and a pedestrian path?

They don't make them like they used to - and I come from a place that knows a thing or two about bridges. The Manhattan Bridge was built in 1909 however, a good twenty-five years or so before any of the Bay bridges were completed. While our spans are longer, the ones connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn are monumentally complex and iconic.

I just thought a sight like this was something worth writing home about...

Once again, you speak the gospel truth. While in NYC over the holidays, i did my level best to look like i truly belonged (key: impeccable outerwear, and a smart but snazzy hat). but i still turned into a gawking tourist when venturing over the brooklyn bridge at sunset. the combo of the gorgeous architectural lines of the bridge itself, the consistent rumble of traffic underneath, the diverse crowd of people, and the sun setting near mz. liberty just rocked my jaded norcal world. my subsequent trip to the DUMBO was a perfect capper, as i discovered a cafe/wine bar/ice cream shop/home products store that had the world's most glorious vintage couch in the men's restroom. Christ i need to get back there....
