SPRINGing Forward - For Men!
Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 01:35PM You didn't think Ms. P&C would leave the men out of the spring fashion chat, did you? Looks as though everyone wants some seersucker and brogues...!
"While I'm normally reticent about endorsing individual products, I couldn't resist helping out Annie with spring picks.
For the past three years men's magazines have been promoting seersucker in ever-more perverse cuts and sizes. But I'm going to recommend this simple unstructured blazer from Charles Tyrwhitt. For a casual look I'll put this over a simple white collared shirt, jeans, and Jack Purcells. Slightly more adventurous types will pair it with white linen pants. If it's too bright for your tastes, a navy version is available.
Like everyone this year, I'm a fan of the summer sweater. My early favorite comes from the ur-preppy outfitter J. Press. A deep v-neck is elegant and modern. At their best preppy staples are fun, not fussy. Just a tip with this one: unless you are going to roll your sleeves up your arms, don't wear double cuffs under this one - it will make your wrist look ridiculous.
Also, not cheap, but these are my favorite pocket squares from Paul Stuart..."

"Right now I am in the process of updating my wardrobe for my new job. [In my old job] I could wear anything I wanted. In my new work as Director of Development for an education non-profit which receives over 90% of its budget from well established foundations, I have had to take my sense of style and soften some parts while polishing and formalizing others. My pick for the spring would be these Lorenzo Banfi: Ascot Leather Brogue shoes. They are formal yet have lots of personality and just enough flair."
"I have a wedding in Cape Cod this August and I think I've found the perfect suit. I first saw this blue/white cotton seersucker Jack Victor suit in the Saks "I WANT IT!" catalog. It retails for $695 and I think it's the perfect casual/chic suit for a seaside New England wedding on a Summer afternoon. While I've always been reluctant to buy anything seersucker, this suit is well cut and looks fantastic with a crisp white shirt and a great tan. I definitely "WANT IT!" "

"What I want, more than anything, has, alas, already been purchased out from under me. That is, a straw hat "rescued" from Marlon Brando's estate after he died. (Jack Spade has the details.) I spend an inordinate amount of time finding the perfect straw hat for the upcoming harvest. It must have a wide brim (sun protection in the vineyards), be sturdy enough to survive being dropped, tossed and otherwise abused during the crush of...well, crush, and--most importantly--look damn good with a black t-shirt, jeans and work boots (white tees look better but one NEVER wears white when the grapes start arriving). Typically, I find the aforementioned perfect hat at Wally's Western Wear or somesuch bizarrely American superstore. Why visit these scary places? Because I'm still on some levels a closet cowboy, and--ignoring the horrible trend of drunken greek-affiliated Abercrombie kids with pre-formed "authentic" hats--a straw cowboy hat is insanely malleable, durable, and-worn correctly-effortlessly cool. Alas, they never last too long (my beloved hat from last year was run over by a forklift while i was busy digging out a tank of Pinot).
Alternatively, I'll be eyeing the following excellent, and totally necessary items: Prada Beach Thong Sandals, because my beloved (smelly, trashed) Rainbow flip flops should really never leave my home. Oddica T-shirts, -because every man should own several multipurpose, small production t-shirts. Waxwear Table Tennis Racquet Cover, I have no good reason for wanting this, but some part of my dirty little soul needs it."

"My pick for the summer is a pair of Barker Black tan brogues..." (Gosh - that skull & crossbones is hot! - Ms. P&C)
