Floral Magic

We all know how it feels when someone else gets flowers at work: pure, dagger-eyed envy. Faces go pea-green, and there's the poisonous stab of jealousy in our otherwise pure & friendly hearts. It's the complete opposite emotion of when we're the lucky one to receive the flowers: our day is made, and suddenly we're floating away on a cloud of floral bliss. This ecstatic state is a somewhat rare event for most of us, with flower-receiving days being mostly limited to birthdays, Valentine's, or anniversaries. Some especially lucky people get them "just because," but the "just because" events are even more rare than the actual calendared "special" days.
So, given that flower-receiving at work is akin to the laying of a golden egg, shouldn't the flowers be equally rare and wonderful?
Enter Birch, the new San Francisco florist shop that is creating floral pieces truly worthy of jealous ire. The blooms are luscious, fragrant, luxurious, and arranged like a Houdini illusion. I'm not kidding. A recent Birch arrangement received by one of my coworkers looked like it was suspended in thin air, without any water supply. Yet, at second-glance, you could see that it was standing magically upright in a shallow pool of water, like a delicate and colorful Excalibur. What spell has been cast here? How does this work? Only the girls at Birch seem to know.
When this incredible offering arrived at our office, I knew I immediately needed to know more for myself. One can only imagine how happy I was to know that Birch is in Presidio Heights, nestled into a spot just around the corner from my apartment! Given the colorful bouquets and arrangements, it's only fitting to find the boutique finished in a black-on-black, specially-designed to make the florals stand out. It is here that owners Erin Rosenow and Torryne Choate have melded their love of fashion, art, and music into floral magic. I cannot resist what they call "bespoke hand-tied hostess bouquets"... What? Amazing! And they're all tied up with a provocatively sexy black silk ribbon to boot.
In a city and neighborhood with sky-high expectations for floral creativity, Birch has arrived as the next generation of San Francisco-floral-chic. I can only hope I'll be on the receiving end of one of their floating floral confections some day...fingers crossed!
