Le Mariage

Flowers arrive at the Elysée Palace...
Yes! It's official...French President Nicolas Sarkozy has married supermodel/popstar Carla Bruni!

Phew! I thought at least that my original post on this subject would have moved off the front page before the grand event, but it doesn't mean I love it any less!

As friends have been furiously emailing me the moment-to-moment headlines, I find that we're all in agreement: this is THE tabloid story of 2007-2008 so far. Sarkozy's approval rating has been sinking lately, showing that public appeal and falling in love are inversely proportional, which I find rather sad. While the whole thing does create that certain curiosity that usually surrounds car crashes, one has to admit that the story is entertaining, glamorous, completely non-sequiteur as far as French politics goes, and otherwise appealing in that old-world European "see-you-at-Eden Roc" sort of way.

The wedding was a private affair of only about twenty people at the Elysée Palace, the presidential residence, in Paris. No one knows what the bride wore designer-wise, but hopefully we'll get an image some day soon.

Congratulations and best wishes to the newlyweds!

Here are some news feeds from AFP, the International Herald Tribune and Paris Match... And I'm certain The Luxe Chronicles will be chiming in on this one too!

PS - Thanks Randall for the 411 flash!

Zut! Am I that predictable? I will indeed be publishing a post on this topic tomorrow (Monday) entitled "Sartorial Style At l'Elysee Palace: A Hint Of Things To Come?" The new Madame Sarkozy may find herself in a bit of a bind when it comes to choosing her frocks.
