In Like a Lamb

white-lamb-on-central-snark.jpgYes, March is here and in Northern California it's so incredibly lovely outside that we're getting duped into thinking this is summer. But hey - our summers are so weird, maybe this IS the real thing! At any rate, the blissful temperatures are making my work wardrobe choices confused - it's too warm to wear a coat, but not yet warm enough for white pants and sandals. What to do?

While I pontificate on this question, I bring you some of my current favorite things from around the big bad internet...

In case you didn't catch a copy of The New York Times' T Style Magazine, here's a great mention of the Neue Galerie's upcoming show: Wiener Werkstätte Jewelry. The Wiener Werkstätte is one of my favorite moments in art and design history. It's goal was to re-vamp the design and function of all aspects of life: home, art, fashion, industrial design, furniture, etc...making things not just usable, but beautiful too. The jewelry of this era is rich and unusual, using precious and semi-precious stones because at the time (during World War I) it was considered unseemly to wear real gems and jewelry. I certainly plan to visit this show later this spring!

Another person whom I'm certain will attend is Wendy Brandes, who explains the jewelry of the Tudor Era with her post on The Other Boelyn Girl. Having seen this film this weekend I'm inclined to agree that it is indeed "Anne Boelyn for Dummies." The complex and detailed storyline of the novel has been cut to pieces and dumbed-down for the sake of an hour and thirty-minute costume show. Yes, it looks beautiful, but add it to your Netflix queue instead.

Whipped Cream & Other Delights - 1965
Wendy B also made a comment on my post about Dior and Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - mentioning Herb Alpert's famous album cover for Whipped Cream and Other Delights.  Um yeah. Sex on a stick, Wendy B. This was another one that got a lot of play in our house, so I can tell you with some authority that it ain't just a pretty cover - the music is classically swank. Throw this on at your next cocktail party to receive some of those knowing smiles from those in-the-know. As far as the cover is concerned, here's the spoiler: the model appears to be wearing only whipped cream, but in fact she's nestled into a white blanket covered in shaving cream because, you know...whipped cream melts when it gets hot. She does have whipped cream on her head though.

Your fun fact for the day.

The Luxe Chronicles turned us on to Dahlia in Montreal, who wants us to know that shopping with a conscience doesn't merely mean things should be "eco-friendly". Yes, this is all a hot topic right now along with "the ethics of fashion", (whaaattt?) but what some are quick to point out, very few are quick to follow. On a recent shopping trip, Dahlia noted the country of origin on many designer labels...you may be shocked at what she found!

If you're interested in a bit more on the Annie Leibovitz show that I just posted about, please visit Victoria at SFGirlbybay's post about the exhibit...she took the pictures I was too afraid to snap!

Finally, I've totally fallen in love with the girls at Trendinista. Maybe I'm the last to know these things, but these two are fucking genious. (And you know I don't use the term lightly.)  Just look at this post comparing Alexander McQueen's Fall 2008 show to lighting design. Ooooh you chicks are just so damn clever. I shoulda written that!
