Ten Things: Yellow Jackets
Monday, August 11, 2008 at 2:28PM I have some new neighbors. They live between my wall and a warped piece of wood that trims my bedroom window. They're small, populous, and very busy. Lots of comings & goings - I can never tell who really lives there or who's just visiting. At first I thought it was bees. I love bees - they're cute, hard-working, and bring pollen to the crops while they bring honey to our tables. You may have heard that bees are experiencing and alarming population decline these days; hives are disappearing at epidemic proportions, and no one seems to know why. It's thought that if bees disappear from the earth then the human race will soon follow! Well, I'm not going to contribute to the decline of the human race, so I tried to get them moved somehow.
Enter The Bee Guy. San Francisco has a bee club - did you know? He came over and quickly diagnosed the situation. Not bees, but yellow jackets. Although yellow jackets do feast on other pests like mosquitoes, they're mostly mean and don't really pollenate or do anything productive. In other words: time to exterminate. So much for imagining myself as the savior of bee-kind.
In the spirit of my soon-to-be disappearing neighbors, I've created a ten things of yellow jackets - the chic kind! If the designers are trying to tell us something it's that everyone should have yellow jackets!
