Shop Up the Pop Up from Coast to Coast!
Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 8:27AM This weekend gets a jump on the official holiday shopping season with some fun shopping events in both New York and San Francisco. Pop Up shops (has Oxford added that term to the lexicon yet?) featuring cool and slightly-under-the-radar designers will be emerging, as well as trunk shows with more luxe-appeal.
In San Francisco, the huge Thread Show will be taking over Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavillion with dozens of locally-based designers. On-site festivities include art demos, music, and custom t-shirt making. Personally, I'm looking forward to this event and I'm hoping it's not filled the usual culprits of screen-printed tees and letterpress cards. Not that I don't like those things, but enough is enough. Let's get some more handmade fashion into the mix!
Also, Market SF will be opening it's Pop-Up in Hayes Valley. Designers include San Francisco Etsyians such as TomGirl, KennaKristine, and other local designers too. This pop-up will run through the beginning of January, which is a generous and fabulous plan for keeping some local talent in a buzz-worthy retail spot. Market SF Pop-Up will be at 560 Hayes Street and will run from November 21 - January 10.
In New York, one of my favorite people - Ms. Wendy Brandes - is holding a Pre-Holiday Sale down in the village. He amazing array of jewelry inspired by everything from Nefertiti to Mudflap Girls will be there, so there's no reason you shouldn't be! Go on and get distracted by something shiny. This event will also feature the amazing fashion designs of Zang Toi, just in case you need a gown to go with that bling.
Meanwhile, the downtown boys will be gathering in NoLiTa, where they'll no doubt be standing around, looking insouciantly weathered and emo at the same time. The Pop Up Flea will be back once again, showing off it's well-honed man stylings. Everything will be carefully chosen by Randy Goldberg and Michael Williams, so you're sure to look precisely pulled-together in your rugged manliness. (Ironic facial hair is entirely optional.)
