Kate Spade Lends a Hand

Kate Spade's Hand in Hand Colorblock Mittens - $95I just received word about Kate Spade's new Women for Women collection of handcrafted knit accessories. A partnership with Women for Women International, each piece is handmade by a woman artisan in a war-torn country such as Bosnia, creating work and income opportunities in these areas. The traditional artistry and craftsmanship is upheld, while a vital sense of purpose is brought to the community.
The products, currently mittens, scarves, and dog sweaters, are full of stripes and pompoms in the typical Kate Spade style. While I personally find them a little bit too youthful for my own taste, I think they're charming for festive weekend attire or nights out during the holidays.
From now until November 17th, if you spend $200, Kate Spade will foot the enrollment sponsorship for another woman to become a part of Women for Women International. For more on the program, you can also read Creative Director Deborah Lloyd's journal about the entire process!
Style aside, I love it when a company seeks out and supports traditional craftsmanship, wherever it may be. These crafts will endure because of programs like this, and we all know that the products will endure much longer than anything mass-produced with no soul. Plus, remember last year's Kate Spade mittens? These too will surely be a coveted must-have in the same way, so there's only one thing more to do: shop.
