Some Housekeeping...
Monday, August 3, 2009 at 4:06PM Hi everyone! Can you believe it's August already? I certainly did not think it would arrive quite so quickly, but here it is. Crazy. So, to catch you all up, here are a few points of general housekeeping to start the month off right.
Renegade Re-Cap
Thanks so much to everyone for supporting the launch of Sourdough at the Renegade Craft Fair! The whole weekend went very well and I was pleased with the overall response from so many different people. I also loved meeting all kinds of crafters and artists who stopped by to tell me how much they loved the Sourdough line. It was actually, quite touching - all of their work is so amazing, it's an honor just to be in the group!
First, you really must treat yourself to a few t-shirts from Gangs of San Francisco. This artist gets inspired by old San Francisco legends and history and has developed a line of tees to celebrate our bygone days. All of them are fantastic, but I treated myself to the Playland tee and have been getting compliments from old timers on the street ever since! (Playland at the Beach was an amusement park that used to stand out at San Francisco's Ocean Beach, but which went away for new condos in the 1970s - like everything that was once cool.)
Second, please check out the sisters McCabe. The lovely and exciting Taryn McCabe came over to the booth late in the day on Sunday saying "I've had my eye on your jackets all weekend!" I instantly went into AwShucks mode, and have been a doting admirer ever since. Taryn's two lines are Tom Girl - a line of handcrafted leather accessories that are to die for, and Button Bee - a group of handmade porcelain buttons. She & her sister Mel have a line together called Mary Ann Gets Married, which focuses on bridal jewelry. Mel McCabe's self-titled line of jewelry features stunning Swarovski crystal combos as well as metal and beads. Can you believe all this creativity could come out of just one family? I treated myself to a pair of Taryn's luscious leather Cascade Earrings from Tom Girl in metallic gold - they're sexy, fun, and lighter than air! Love it!
Other fantastic shops I loved checking out? Nous Savons, Sweet Evie, and the lovely ArtGoodies which came all the way from Grand Rapids, MI to be at San Francisco's Renegade.
Please also be sure to visit Kim's Sourdough write up on J'Adore Couture, and to keep up with all things Sourdough you can check out The Toaster - Sourdough's blog!
Summer Gloom
It may be summer where you are, but in San Francisco it's been winter since about June 1st. They call it the "June Gloom", but this year it's stretched on for quite a bit longer. It's this thing with the marine layer - we get all the cold fog while the inland places get all the heat. I don't usually complain, but as I write this, this is the first day I've seen a cloudless sky in weeks. You must understand that it's a bit tough to take at times, and it does wear on the psyche quite a bit.
I'm looking forward to a few days in Tahoe next week where hopefully, as Hemingway said in A Farewell to Arms: "the cold clean clear air of the mountains will restore you."
Poetic & Chic Anniversary!
Yes, it's true. I missed P&C's Third Birthday on July 16th. I'm a bad mother, I know. Everything was happening all at once with Renegade prep, etc, and while I didn't forget, I just didn't have it in me.
When I started Poetic & Chic three years ago it was really an experiment. I thought I had something to say, and fashion blogging was just beginning. I was one of the founding members of Coutorture, and loved that I was a part of something, and that my opinions were actually heard and appreciated. Today, the blogging world is quite a bit more crowded, Coutorture isn't the same, and I feel like the fashion bloggers can be a big clique of really not-that-interesting content. I love the ones I have relationships with, don't get me wrong, but while I've tried to be an active participant in other networks, I've been soundly shut down for offering different opinions and ideas.
I didn't start writing P&C to be in a sorority, and it wasn't that way until recently. In fact, I've always stayed away from the "popular" fashion content as it were, because of this very reason. I plan to continue on with this point of view - more culture, art, inspiration, opinion, etc, - because it's me, and I think there's still room for something in the "fashion/style" category that's a bit different than the rest.
It has been getting harder though, which is why my content has been slowing down. Also, now that I'm self-employed with two different companies working, it's a lot harder to get motivated to write about the fun stuff. But I will keep at it, even if things come intermittently - I hope you all understand. Some weeks will be busy, some weeks will be quiet - but I think that's normal. Blogs that write all the time can sometimes have issues with quality content, and I know *I'd* be that kind of blog if I forced myself to publish every day.
So, I suppose this is a round-about way of saying thank you to everyone who's been with me from the beginning and to those who've just discovered me. I love your comments and feedback, and I'm so happy that you've invited Poetic & Chic into your lives!
THANK YOU!
