Postcard: Beaune, Bourgogne

Today's postcard is of the famous Hospices de Beaune in the Côte d'Or area of Burgundy. I visited the museum here when I was living in France and I'm still fascinated by the intricate and colorful tilework on the roof. A notable element of buildings in Burgundy, the tiles are made in four colors, (red, brown, yellow, and green) and are then arranged in interlaced patterns.
The Hospices were founded in the 15th century by a local nobleman and his wife in order to provide a hospital for the poor and needy. Serving as a regional hospital, it was most active during the decades of the Black Plague. One thing I vividly remember about the place was the love between this nobleman, Nicholas Rolin, and his wife, Guigone de Salins. Throughout the buildings the word "Seulle" is engraved in tiles and stonework, along with the family monogram. "Seulle", is an ancient form of the word "seul" meaning "only"...as in "you're my one and only..." It's a very romantic thing, but I suppose if you're building an entire hospital to honor someone it should be stated somewhere.
Of course the Côte d'Or region makes some of the best wines in all of France, and the Hospices host an annual charity wine auction each November.
