I Know the Best People

Catie of Cuffington, as photographed by Tommy Ton on Style.comAs I look around my mixed-up life I find one steady mainstay over and over again: the astounding talent in my circle of friends and acquaintances. This week especially I've been charmed and encouraged by so many of them, making their dreams come true all over the map. I know that sounds like the Laverne & Shirley theme song, but it's so true. Let me just share a few examples, and I'll try not to get emotional with pride...I'm just so honored to know these gals.

First, Catie from Cuffington has written an incredible series about New York Fashion Week on her blog. When Catie said she was going to make this journey happen come hell or high water, I knew just by virtue of her own determination and love of fashion that her trip would be magical. And it has been just that, magical. Writing personal and stylish posts that are beautifully aesthetic, witty, and wise, Catie has taken in every bit of fashion week and absorbed it with a pure heart. The universe has also given back, with a flurry of "only in New York" encounters for her. In fact, the other night I ran into a group of other San Francisco bloggers at an event, and we talked of nothing else. Catie's series on fashion week should win an award...

Second, Rue Magazine is a pure delight. If you're not initiated into the Twitter-blogoshpere-Facebook buzz about this new online magazine, you must dive in! The first issue which launched just this morning is delightfully charming, polished, and beautiful - but not fussy. A complete achievement! Last week when I went out with Caitlin, one of the principal contributors of Rue, she was talking about how everyone on the team was nervous, hoping and praying that they'd actually make the launch deadline. They did, and now they have a hit on their hands. This first issue also includes a spread on the beautiful home of Victoria Smith, of SFGirlbyBay. All around, a wonderful wonderful offering in the new world of online design magazines. Every page had me tearing up with pride!

Now we come to Beth Spotswood. Beth and I are just acquaintances by virtue of the wonders of the internets, but we both went to the same high school here in San Francisco, and we were both recently featured in that high school's alumni magazine for being bloggers of note. Beth's writing and editorial skill has taken her to CBS5, but she still maintains her Culture Blog over on SFGate - the online home of the San Francisco Chronicle. This week I was delighted by her post about having dinner with the famous food critic, Michael Bauer. I laughed out loud at her nerves and star-struck self deprication, and thought that Spots actually stole Bauer's thunder. It's not every day that two such stars of local culture come together and inspire each other, so this must be taken in!

And finally, my friend Julie Michelle is busy in the midst of prepping her show at SOMArts, beginning in just over two months. When she sent out the press release last week, I read through it and realize just how amazing her I Live Here SF project actually is - and to produce it all in just about a year! Perhaps since I was one of the first candidates in Julie's project I haven't realized just how huge this effort has been. That's not to say that I haven't taken note of it, but it was when I re-read her press release that I really thought about it. I know how hard this year has been for Julie, but she has truly created something great from simply digging deep into her hobby and love of people.  Always ready to talk old movies and art, or to grab a cheap bite someplace, Julie has also been a steady, wonderful friend to me and so many others. I'm so glad that this show at SOMArts is coming together! I cannot wait - and all of you should be there at the opening on November 5th!

Annie! My goodness, this is such a wonderful piece. I am truly flattered and deeply honored. I live here:SF might be one of the best ideas I've ever had, just because it brought me friends like you. Thank you for your generosity and kindness. You have made the start of my day magnificent.
